1.0 Network Fundamentals. 20%. 1.2 Describe characteristics of network topology architectures. 1.2e Small office/home office (SOHO)

Explain the role and function of network components.

A small office/home office is a remote site that connects to the HQ with a WAN. It will be a small representation of an enterprise network, with a border router, firewall, and local area network, where the endpoints connects to the network. See below:

The modem/border router/firewall could be all in one device, but a good design, is where you let your router do routing and firewall do firewalling so all these devices are separated as shown in the drawing. Each device doing what it’s designed to do. If you don’t want to use your ISP for dns or dhcp, you would have a server on your SOHO network to provide those services. Your firewall would provide NAT services so that you will not be using public ip addressing, which you are not allowed to do, unless you register with ARIN, (American Registry for Internet Numbers).
